Wendy brings a sense of scale to #OWS
Longtime readers here know my opinion on this: when a news schlub reports on fundraising and nothing else, he is not reporting issues at all, merely parroting press releases. We'd be much better off discussing issues than money.
Nonetheless, every now and then a fundraising comparison emerges from which those still capable of news analysis can derive a telling sense of scale.
And here is the latest instance.
National mainstream media antagonist turned national mainstream media darling Occupy Wall Street has raised less money than...local-to-LA mayoral candidate Wendy Greuel has for a primary election that will take place in still-distant March...March 2013.
This might tell you much about how presently hapless the OWS effort is, and, on the other hand, about how bought-off your local civic leaders are.
Of course, neither Wendy nor OWS will raise anywhere near even ten percent on what NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg spent on his last mayoral campaign: over $100 million, which might tell you something else entirely.
All this might also tell you a little about what kind "news analysis" goes on at AP these days. In this instance, you get what you pay for. It would be helpful if the reporter might ask the protesters' spokespeople what they are specifically protesting, rather than take the presser and report it as "news."
