Furutani considers arts, language optional
Warren Furutani was once an educational consultant to Fabien Nunez, whose views on education were drawn with the overriding concern of servicing the State's immigrant population. And there are some tenets of Nunez's immigration-friendly educational schemes that still linger prominently in Furutani's own educational policy.
The Assemblyman and Mayor's man in the CD 15 race thinks that arts and foreign language curricula in LAUSD should be options. He wishes education to become more vocational for students wishing to trade core curriculum subjects for more directly applied skills.
Last year, Furutani brought a bill hoping to alter the curriculum towards vocational training. It passed both chambers, but Schwarzenegger vetoed it.
Furutani still is wed to the idea. As recently as May, he called such curriculum tinkering a dropout prevention measure. He brought the bill back as AB 1330. Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson is a backer.
