Operation Pothole begins today, thank goodness. Sometimes the City actually does things right.
When you sit down with candidates for City Council, and you ask them if there's anyone in the city who's doing things right, more often than not they say, "Bill Robertson," the head of Street Services.
Republicans will bitch and moan about the city's infrastructure crumbling and how much better it would be if only we privatized this service. (We've privatized a couple of arts centers, and they no longer even aspire to serve the public at all). But ideology does not fill potholes: skilled laborers do. All privatization would accomplish in this area is make sure that the job was done with as much eye to profit and possibly even in the hope of failing as soon as possible, to drive more work to the private contractor in the future.
