Jim Newton as Jim Newton's reclamation project: this column, which Newton proudly claims to base on meeting with influential Angelenos, could have been written two years ago, talking to pedestrians. It's worthwhile mentioning that thanks to Newton's stewardship of the opinion columns of the LA Times, these things did not appear in the newspaper two years ago, when every political writer in the City was writing about them.
In fact, it was Newton who orchestrated the Times policy of not mentioning the names of rival candidates in the last Mayor's race.
Thereby Newton and the other scribes at the former fishwrap of record get the Mayor they deserve: one who is checking out of LA even as LA is checking out on him. Only Newton, the hack from news, appears to not yet be aware of how obsequious he remains when he acknowledges that he's basing his columns on meetings "with more than two dozen influential Angelenos." One commoner could have told him everything he needed to know, even two years ago. And believe me--many tried.
