Obama in Cairo
President Obama’s Remarks at Cairo University, Egypt
My favorite line from the speech: "As a boy, I spent several years in Indonesia and heard the call of the azaan at the break of dawn and at the fall of dusk." It is the same kind of experience the literary point to. It was a daring and simple line that links to the tissue-like daily life quality of an ordinary Islam divorced of extremism.
The Wall Street Journal goes in search of reaction on the Muslim street and can't quite find it. In a bit of a non sequitur, it quotes someone who wants Obama to talk more about sub-Saharan Africa. Still "Just one of him is worth 10 George Bushes" is a quote that states what was also obvious to a majority of Americans last November. The BBC fares only slightly better.
A pleasurable followup to Obama in Cairo will certainly be Chomsky at Riverside Church on June 12.
