Korean Air, the world's second most unflyable airline, wants to build a look-at-me tower downtown, the Downtown News's Anna Scott reports. Thomas Properties Group will "spearhead design, development, and leasing." It is all very up in the air with no architect on board, and "a couple of Korean banks have expressed interest"---which they would if you too walked in and said you wanted to build something really big right now---and TPG has tossed a maquette and other speculative eye candy together that will look nothing like what gets built, if anything ever does.
The downtown office vacancy rate is currently 13%. I would expect any bank would require over 85% preleasing in this economic climate, and that is likely to stay true for a few years at least. Imagine the traffic Antietam tearing down the Wilshire Grand will cause on Figueroa.
