--The Downtown News takes the first serious look at Eli Broad's fiasco downtown, The High School for Visual and Performing Arts, which it turns out does more than mock your architectural sensibilities. Five months from its first September, it also has no principal, and sits on the cusp between LAUSD paragon and co-opted, privatized charter school.
--The UTLA hosted a Human Rights conference over the weekend. Speakers expressed concern that "high stakes testing"---great buzzphrase---and charter schools pander too much to the hopes for prepping students for corporate life, to provide CEOs like Eli Broad with a supply of willing workerbees.
--Among the luminaries eulogizing longtime Torrance library system legend, arbitration specialist, and friend of street-hassle Sonia Anderson at the Katy Geissert Civic Center Library in Torrance yesterday was Avis Ridley-Thomas.
